Rutile in quartz forms when titanium dioxide crystals grow inside quartz during or before the quartz finishes forming. Brazil is one of the better-known sources for attractive rutilated quartz, especially pieces with smoky quartz, golden needles, and strong internal contrast. The fine lines inside this specimen are not cracks or scratches in the usual sense, but mineral inclusions trapped inside the quartz as part of its growth history.
