Description: Agatized gastropod fossils are the fossilized remains of gastropods (a class of mollusks that includes snails and slugs) that have undergone a process called agatization. During agatization, the organic material of the gastropod is replaced with silica, often in the form of chalcedony or agate, a form of microcrystalline quartz. This process preserves the detailed structure of the original organism while transforming it into a hard, durable mineral. The agatization process can preserve intricate details of the gastropod's shell, including its spiral structure, surface textures, and internal features.
