Description

Locality: Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Description: This one of a kind Amethyst sphere from Brazil combines a polished agate exterior with a large natural crystal cavity. The outer surface shows dark grey, smoky brown, white, and translucent banding, while the open center is lined with pale lavender Amethyst and clear to milky quartz crystals. The cavity runs deep into the sphere and contains a mix of small druzy crystals and larger pointed terminations. Natural pits, small inclusions, and uneven crystal edges are present throughout, which are normal features of a carved geode sphere.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, with its colour generally caused by trace iron and natural irradiation within the crystal structure. Brazil is one of the world’s largest sources of Amethyst, especially from geode-bearing basalt deposits in Rio Grande do Sul. Large geodes from this region are commonly cut, shaped, and polished into spheres, cathedrals, freeforms, and display pieces while leaving part of the natural crystal pocket exposed.
