Description: Slag glass is a type of glass that was originally produced as a byproduct of metal smelting, specifically from the slag (the waste material) left behind in the refining of metals like copper, iron, or lead. Over time, slag glass became a valuable material in its own right, prized for its unique, colorful appearance and use in various forms of decorative art and jewelry. Before globalization, back when it was very difficult to order gem rough from foreign countries, slag glass was a popular material for USA based gem cutters to work with when they did not have natural gem rough on hand.

Slag glass is often vibrant, with swirling patterns or a marbled effect that can feature every shade of the rainbow. The presence of various minerals in the slag determines the color and patterning, which can include multi-colored veins or opaque spots. It can range from opaque to semi-translucent, and sometimes even transparent, depending on the specific composition of the slag.
