Description
Locality: Alnif area (Oumjrane), Anti-Atlas, Morocco (most likely)
Description: This azurite is most likely from the Oumjrane mining area near Alnif, in the eastern Anti-Atlas of Morocco. Copper has been dug here since at least the Middle Ages. Modern mining restarted in 2011, and the main working, Bou Nahas, has since become the type locality of a new copper mineral, bounahasite, described in 2023.
The copper ore sits in steep veins cutting Upper Ordovician shales, sandstones and conglomerates. Long after the veins formed, weathering near the surface broke down their copper sulphides. That created an oxidation zone dominated by malachite and azurite, a copper carbonate whose deep blue comes from the copper itself.
This azurite, most likely from Oumjrane, Morocco, is a solid little cluster with really sharp, chunky crystals packed together tight. It’s got that dark, almost black look at first glance, but when the light hits it, you get those deep blue flashes coming through on the faces and edges. The crystals are well-formed and have a nice natural shine to them, and the underside has that fine, rough azurite texture that gives it a bit of contrast. It’s a sturdy piece, not delicate, and it sits well for display.
People usually say azurite helps clear your head and get you thinking straight. It’s tied to focus, awareness, and cutting through the noise a bit. Whether you buy into that or not, it’s one of those stones people like to keep around when they want to stay sharp or get a different angle on things.
