Description
Mined from: Oumjrane Mining Area, Tinghir Province, Morocco
Description: This specimen from the Oumjrane Mining Area in Tinghir Province, Morocco features native copper within its natural host rock, displaying green surface coloration produced by the oxidation of copper minerals. When exposed to oxygen and groundwater over time, copper commonly alters to secondary minerals such as malachite, which creates the distinctive green coatings often seen on copper-bearing specimens from this region. The Oumjrane district is well known among collectors for its rich copper mineralization and colorful mineral associations.
Copper deposits at Oumjrane formed through hydrothermal processes, where hot mineral-rich fluids moved through fractures in the surrounding rock and deposited metallic minerals as they cooled. Over time, weathering near the surface altered portions of the copper into secondary minerals, producing the green patinas and mineral coatings now visible on many specimens. These pieces illustrate both the original copper mineralization and the natural chemical processes that modify minerals after formation.
