Description

Locality: Tole, Wana, South Waziristan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan

Description: "Faden" is German for "thread", and it names the white line that runs through these crystals. Faden quartz grows in rock fractures that open slowly and steadily. A quartz crystal bridges the crack, then breaks as the walls pull apart, then heals again in the silica-rich fluid. Each repair traps tiny bubbles of liquid and gas, and over many cycles those trapped bubbles build the milky thread.

Because the crystal keeps growing as the crack widens, faden quartz often ends up flat and platy, with the thread running from tip to tip. A 2025 study found that the thread is made of very closely spaced microfractures, each only a few thousandths of a millimetre wide, sealed with quartz.

These come from Tole near Wana in South Waziristan, Pakistan, a well-known locality for faden quartz. The crystals form in Alpine-type veins in low-grade metamorphic rock.

These pieces are flat, clear quartz crystals with a white thread running through them.

In crystal lore, faden quartz is regarded as a strong energy stone used in meditation.
