Mined from: Oklahoma, USA

Description:

These hourglass selenite crystals from Oklahoma are a distinctive variety of gypsum formed in the salt flats of the Great Salt Plains. The crystals grow in a shallow, evaporitic environment where mineral-rich water repeatedly floods and dries out. As the gypsum crystals form, fine sand becomes trapped inside along the crystal’s growth zones, creating the natural “hourglass” shape that appears suspended within the otherwise clear to milky selenite. Each piece reflects a moment of growth interrupted and resumed, recording environmental changes in real time.

Chemically, selenite is calcium sulfate dihydrate: CaSO₄·2H₂O. In this region, the interplay between groundwater saturation, evaporation rates, and loose sediment allows for rapid crystal formation just below the surface. Unlike many gemstones that require deep geologic time and pressure, these crystals can form relatively quickly and are often found loose in the sandy substrate. The hourglass inclusion is not a separate mineral but the same surrounding sand locked into the crystal structure as it develops, making each specimen a natural geological cross-section of its environment.

Many people are drawn to hourglass selenite for its association with clarity, cycles, and grounding. The visible inclusion is often seen as a symbol of balance between movement and stillness, or time captured within a fixed form. It is commonly used in spaces where focus and reset are valued, with the belief that it helps clear mental clutter while keeping you anchored.
