Description

Mined from: China

Era: Early Cretaceous
Geological Age: 123–120 mya

Description: This one of a kind Hyphalosaurus fossil specimen preserves the distinctive long-bodied form of the animal on a square gray shale slab. The piece is especially eye-catching because the tail curves in a broad arc across the matrix while the narrow neck rises to a small skull, giving the fossil a graceful, almost calligraphic outline. It has a natural study-specimen look, with the skeletal structure standing out clearly against the flat stone.

Hyphalosaurus was an extinct freshwater choristodere rather than a dinosaur, and it became one of the best-known reptiles of China’s Jehol fossil beds. The genus was formally named in 1999, and material from Liaoning helped establish it as an important animal for understanding Early Cretaceous lake ecosystems and long-necked aquatic reptiles from the Jehol Biota.
