Description: Hamar Laghdad is a ridge in Morocco's eastern Anti-Atlas known for the Kess-Kess, rows of cone-shaped Early Devonian mud mounds. The mounds grew on the sea floor above an old submarine volcanic high, where faults carried warm fluids up to the sea floor.
Venting came and went over millions of years, from the late Emsian into the early Frasnian, with most mound growth in the Emsian. Brachiopods thrived here. Researchers have described distinct brachiopod communities living between the mounds and inside cavities within them.
Brachiopods look like clams but are a separate group of animals. They were among the most common shelled creatures in Devonian seas.
On these fossils much of the outer shell has worn away, showing the muscle scars on the surface.
