Description: Petrified wood from the Arizona Petrified Forest is famous for its vibrant colors and remarkable preservation. This area showcases ancient trees that lived around 200 million years ago. The wood has undergone a permineralization process, primarily involving silica, which gives it beautiful hues of reds, browns, yellows, and even blues and greens. This rainbow wood is a variety of colours which is due to the original wood structure being replaced by minerals in the silica. The oranges and reds are from hematite inclusions, the yellow from limonite, and the purple from magnesium based minerals.
Petrified wood is a type of fossil formed when plant material, typically wood, is buried under sediment and then subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. During this process, the organic material is replaced by minerals, usually silica, which crystallize and preserve the original structure of the wood. The result is a beautiful, often colorful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
