Description

Mined from: Alluvial placer deposits, Madagascar

Description: Zircon placer specimens from Madagascar usually consist of natural zircon crystals or rounded grains that have been concentrated in gravel or sandy deposits by running water. These specimens may show earthy matrix, worn surfaces, or partially preserved crystal faces depending on how far the material traveled before settling. Colors can range from reddish brown and honey tones to orange, tan, or darker brown, and the pieces have a dense, weighty feel for their size.

Zircon is a zirconium silicate and one of the most important accessory minerals in geology because it is extremely durable and resistant to weathering. That toughness is exactly why it survives after the surrounding rock breaks down, allowing it to collect in placer deposits. In Madagascar, zircons found in placers were originally eroded out of older igneous and metamorphic rocks, then sorted and concentrated by water into sedimentary deposits. Zircon is also well known in science because tiny crystals of it are used in geochronology to date some of Earth’s oldest rocks.

Many people are drawn to zircon for its association with clarity, wisdom, and steady energy. It is often chosen by those who want a stone linked with grounding, focus, and inner strength. As a placer specimen, it can also carry an added sense of endurance and survival, since the crystal has persisted through erosion, transport, and time before being found.
