Description: Ammonites were a group of marine cephalopods that lived from the Late Devonian period (about 400 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period (about 66 million years ago). They are closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. 

Agatized ammonites are fossilized ammonite shells that have undergone a process of mineral replacement, where the original shell material has been replaced by agate—a form of chalcedony, which is a type of quartz. The agatization occurs when mineral-rich groundwater permeates the shell, depositing silica over time. The result is a fossil with the detailed structure of the ammonite shell preserved, but now made of agate instead of the original calcium carbonate. These agatized ammonites are prized by collectors and geologists for their striking appearance and the detailed preservation of the ammonite's intricate shell structure.
