Description

Origin: Madagascar

Description: Black Tourmaline, or schorl, is a powerful presence in the mineral world, instantly recognizable for its deep, opaque black coloration and naturally striated surfaces. This rough material from Madagascar highlights the island’s reputation for producing high-quality lapidary stone, with its columnar formations and glassy luster. With a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5, it offers the durability needed for cutting, cabbing, or tumbling, while still displaying the rugged textures of its raw crystalline growth.

Madagascar’s deposits yield particularly well-formed tourmaline, making it a favorite among lapidary artists and collectors alike. When shaped and polished, the material takes on a smooth, reflective finish that enhances its dramatic dark tones. Whether transformed into cabochons, beads, or tumbled stones, each piece of rough carries the signature striations and density of tourmaline, offering a perfect balance of natural character and lapidary potential.
