Brookite was named in 1825 by the mineralogist Armand Lévy in honour of Henry James Brooke (1771–1857), an English textile manufacturer and amateur crystallographer who was a fellow of the Royal Society. Its type locality, where it was first described, is in Gwynedd, Wales.
Brookite is one of the natural forms of titanium dioxide, together with rutile and anatase. It is found as an accessory mineral in alpine-type veins in gneiss and schist and in hydrothermal veinlets, often with quartz, anatase, rutile and hematite. It is a widespread mineral, but only a few localities produce fine crystals.
Brookite is a titanium dioxide mineral (TiO₂) and one of the three primary polymorphs of TiO₂, alongside rutile and anatase. It forms in the orthorhombic crystal system, and its rare, striking crystal habits make it a favorite among mineral collectors. While rutile is the most stable form of titanium dioxide, brookite is rarer and prized for its unique crystal formations. Though Brookite is less common than rutile or anatase, it often forms alongside them in the same deposits. Brookite, like other TiO₂ polymorphs, is a semiconductor with photocatalytic abilities, making it useful for applications in environmental cleanup, renewable energy, and medical devices.
Brookite is a high-vibrational crystal associated with the Crown and Third Eye Chakras, enhancing spiritual growth, intuition, and connection to higher realms. It aligns energy centers, aids meditation, and promotes clarity, making it a powerful stone for those seeking enlightenment and heightened awareness.
