Description
Mined from: Merelani Hills, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania
Description: This one of a kind tanzanite specimen has a strong natural crystal form with a rich violet-blue body color and a noticeably transparent to translucent interior. The crystal shows sharp faces, clear vertical growth lines, and a tapered, sculptural shape that gives it a refined look even in rough form. Depending on the angle, the color shifts from a cooler blue-violet to a softer lavender tone, which gives the piece more depth than a flat, uniform stone. It is a small but striking specimen, with enough clarity and shape to show why natural tanzanite crystals are so appealing on their own.
Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of zoisite, and it comes from one small mining district in northern Tanzania. Its color is caused mainly by trace vanadium, and the stone is famous for pleochroism, meaning different directions can show different colors, often blue, violet, and slightly purplish tones. That optical behavior is one of the reasons tanzanite became so desirable in the gem trade. In natural crystal form, you also get to see the mineral’s internal growth features, zoning, and cleavage directions, all of which are usually lost once the stone is cut. Because tanzanite has one perfect cleavage direction and is not especially tough, intact crystals with attractive color and recognizable form are appreciated by collectors as both mineral specimens and gem rough.
Many people are drawn to tanzanite for its association with perspective, intuition, and personal transition. It is often chosen by those who feel they are moving into a new phase and want a stone that symbolizes insight, calm thinking, and meaningful change. Its blue-violet color gives it a quiet intensity that many people find both elegant and grounding.
