Description: This one of a kind tanzanite specimen shows the sharp, elongated crystal form that makes natural tanzanite so recognizable to collectors. The piece has a clear violet-blue to blue-purple body color, with a smaller attached crystal adding extra character and dimension. Tanzanite is the gem variety of zoisite, a calcium aluminum silicate mineral that became world famous only after its discovery in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania in the twentieth century. Its blue to violet color is mainly caused by trace vanadium, and its appearance changes depending on viewing direction because the mineral is strongly pleochroic. In rough crystal form, tanzanite also reveals its natural growth patterns, striations, zoning, and cleavage directions, which are often removed or hidden once the stone is cut for jewelry.
