Description
Mined from: Merelani Hills, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania
Description: This one of a kind tanzanite specimen shows the sharp, elongated crystal form that makes natural tanzanite so recognizable to collectors. The piece has a clear violet-blue to blue-purple body color, with a smaller attached crystal adding extra character and dimension. In the photos, the crystal shows good transparency in places, visible internal features, natural surface lines, and the straight-sided prismatic shape typical of zoisite. It is a compact specimen, but it has strong visual impact because the color remains obvious even at a small size, and the crystal form is still easy to read.
Tanzanite is the gem variety of zoisite, a calcium aluminum silicate mineral that became world famous only after its discovery in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania in the twentieth century. It is found in only one small mining area, which is one reason it remains so closely tied to its source. Its blue to violet color is mainly caused by trace vanadium, and its appearance changes depending on viewing direction because the mineral is strongly pleochroic. That means one crystal can show blue, violet, and slightly purplish tones depending on angle and lighting. In rough crystal form, tanzanite also reveals its natural growth patterns, striations, zoning, and cleavage directions, which are often removed or hidden once the stone is cut for jewelry.
Many people are drawn to tanzanite for its association with insight, change, and mental clarity. It is often chosen by those who feel they are entering a new chapter or trying to see their situation more clearly. Its cool blue-violet color gives it a calm, thoughtful presence that many people connect with reflection, intuition, and steady personal growth.
