描述

Locality: Ampliación a Victoria Mine, Navajún, La Rioja, Spain

Pyrite is iron disulfide, FeS2, the most abundant and widespread sulfide mineral. Its name comes from the Greek for fire, because sparks can be struck from it. It is pale brass-yellow with a bright metallic lustre, hard for a sulfide at 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and grows as cubes, pyritohedra, octahedra and combinations of these.

The pyrite deposits of the Cameros Basin in La Rioja, including Navajún and Ambasaguas, are listed by the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) as a site of geological interest, described as unique worldwide for the perfection and size of their crystals, up to 10 cm along an edge. The crystals are scattered through metre-thick marl layers in Early Cretaceous rocks. They formed during hydrothermal metamorphism, when deep fluids mobilised sulfur while the iron came from the surrounding sediment.

At Navajún, cubic crystals and groups of cubes predominate. Its main mine, Ampliación a Victoria, lies about 3.5 km from the village and is worked only to recover pyrite for collections and decoration. According to the University of Zaragoza's virtual mineralogy museum, it has produced the best cubic pyrite crystals found anywhere in the world.

This one of a kind cubic Pyrite cluster mineral specimen from Spain features a striking group of sharp, metallic cubic pyrite crystals with a bright brassy-gold to silver-gold sheen. The specimen has strong geometric structure, made up of three identifiable cubes, clean flat faces, sharp angular edges, and darker reflective recesses that add depth between the crystal forms. Subtle surface striations, natural contact marks, and small textured growth areas give the piece an architectural, sculptural look while preserving its raw mineral character.

Pyrite, often called “fool’s gold,” is an iron sulfide mineral known for its metallic luster and naturally cubic crystal habit. Pyrite gained a brief popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms, most notably the wheellock, where a sample of pyrite was placed against a circular file to strike the sparks.

It is often associated with protection, confidence, motivation, it's clean shape a suggestion of security and steadfast structure. and prosperity. In crystal traditions, pyrite is associated with energy and drive.
