Description: Armadillo scutes are the bony plates that form the protective outer covering of armadillos. These ones are attributed to Holmesina, an extinct pampathere, a large armored mammal closely related to modern armadillos. Pampatheres lived in Florida during the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. H. floridanus specifically lived in what is now Florida, hence its name. It was a herbivore and had a heavily armored shell, resembling a gigantic armadillo. Pampatheres are known from fossils found across the Americas and went extinct around the end of the Pleistocene.
