Description: Hedenbergite is an iron-rich member of the pyroxene mineral group, formed primarily in high-temperature environments such as contact metamorphic zones and skarn deposits. The specimens from the Huanggang Mine in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, are particularly notable for their well-formed dark green to nearly black prismatic crystals, often growing alongside minerals such as quartz, garnet, and calcite. The Huanggang deposit is one of China’s most prolific sources of high-quality mineral specimens and has produced many exceptional crystallized examples of hedenbergite sought after by collectors.

As a calcium iron silicate, hedenbergite typically forms where silica-rich fluids interact with iron-bearing rocks during metamorphism. These geological conditions create sharp, elongated crystals with a vitreous to slightly metallic luster. Specimens from Huanggang often display dramatic crystal clusters and strong structural definition, making them visually striking display pieces and important examples of skarn mineralization.
