Moldavite is the only known European tektite, a natural glass formed by a meteorite impact. About 14.5 to 15 million years ago, a large meteorite, probably a stony body 500 to 1,000 m across, struck what is now southern Germany and created the Ries crater. Molten surface rock was thrown east-northeast and fell across what is now the Czech Republic, Lusatia in Germany and Lower Austria.
Roughly a million tonnes of moldavite glass may have formed, but only about 1% of it survives today. More than 99% of all moldavites have been found in the southern České Budějovice Basin of South Bohemia, along a strip a few kilometres wide that runs from Netolice to Besednice. Moldavite is unusually rich in silica, about 80%, and its low iron and titanium content help make it translucent green.
This one-of-a-kind Moldavite specimen from Besednice, Czech Republic has an elongated, curved splash-form shape with a dark smoky olive-green body and lighter translucent green edges. The surface is deeply sculpted with natural ripples, ridges, pitting, and glassy flow texture, giving the piece a dramatic wing-like profile. Its thin, arched form shows both glossy black-green areas and pale transparent rims, and the exact specimen pictured is the one offered.
Moldavite is a rare natural impact glass, or tektite, formed when the Ries meteorite impact in southern Germany ejected molten silica-rich material across Central Europe around 14.8 million years ago. Moldavite is not a true crystal but an amorphous natural glass, often recognized by its etched surface, flow marks, and distinctive olive to forest-green color.
