Description

Locality: Yanga Koubenza Quarries, Mfouati District, Bouenza Department, Republic of the Congo

Description: This one of a kind Smithsonite mineral specimen from Congo features bright turquoise-blue Smithsonite covering a reddish-brown matrix. The specimen has a mix of smooth botryoidal growth, rounded bubble-like formations, and crusty druzy areas across the surface. The colour is strong and even in several sections, with lighter blue-white patches and exposed iron-rich matrix giving the piece a good natural contrast. It has a solid display face and an earthy, unpolished base that shows how the Smithsonite formed over the host rock.

Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate mineral, often found in oxidized zones of zinc deposits. It can form in a wide range of colours, but blue and turquoise Smithsonite specimens are especially popular with collectors because of their clean colour and rounded crystal habit. Congo is known for producing colourful secondary copper and zinc minerals, including bright blue-green Smithsonite material from mineral-rich mining regions.

In crystal traditions, smithsonite is associated with calm, patience and communication.
