Description: These fossil urchins from Wüllen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany is a classic example of a preserved echinoid, with the rounded to heart-shaped form that makes these fossils so recognizable. Pieces from this area are valued for their natural symmetry, clear body outline, and the subtle surface pattern left by the original skeletal plates. Even simple examples have a strong natural-history look because the shape is so distinct and easy to recognize as an ancient sea urchin.

Wüllen is a well-known German fossil locality, and fossil urchins from there are commonly linked with Micraster, a genus of heart urchin found in Cretaceous marine sediments. These animals lived on or in the seafloor, and their remains were buried in marine sediment and later fossilized. That is why specimens from this region often preserve the overall body form so well, even when finer surface detail has softened with time.

People are often drawn to fossil urchins because of their orderly form and quiet, ancient presence. Symbolically, they are associated with protection, endurance, and the passage of time, and many people like them for the grounded, steady feeling they bring as a reminder of long natural history condensed into one small object.
