Description

Locality: Mibladen Mining District, Morocco

Vanadinite is a lead chlorovanadate, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, and belongs to the apatite group. It typically grows as well-formed hexagonal prisms, in colours from red-orange and deep red to brownish red and yellow, with a subresinous to subadamantine lustre. It is soft, at 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and unusually heavy for its size, with a density of about 6.9.

It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidised zone of lead deposits, where vanadium leached from the surrounding rock combines with lead. The Handbook of Mineralogy lists Mibladen among the world's localities for large vanadinite crystals. It also notes that the original type specimen was lost at sea.

In 1801 the mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río, working at the Real Seminario de Minería in Mexico City, analysed a "brown lead" ore from Zimapán, Mexico, and reported a new element in it. He later called it erythronium, for the red colour of its salts. French chemists who tested his sample decided it was only chromium, and he withdrew the claim.

This one of a kind Vanadinite specimen from Morocco features a dense cluster of dark burgundy to nearly black-red Vanadinite crystals with a glossy, metallic-looking luster. The crystals form a compact sculptural mound, with strong geometric faces, stepped growth patterns, and deep wine-red translucency visible along some edges. Its bold color, sharp crystal definition, and dramatic display presence make it a striking collector’s piece.

Originally discovered in Mexico in 1801, Vanadinite an uncommon, and curious mineral. It contains the previously undiscovered element, Vanadium, and is classified as a secondary mineral, occurring only as the result of chemical alterations to pre-existing materials, primarily the oxidation of lead rich minerals such as galena, or barite.

Vanadinite is sometimes called the "caffeine crystal" used to boost energy, mental focus, and creativity, often acting as a grounding tool for manifesting ideas into reality. It connects deeply with the root and sacral chakras, aiding in discipline, overcoming procrastination, and providing endurance for long projects.
