Ruby is the red variety of Corundum, one of the hardest natural minerals used in jewellery and lapidary work. Its red colour comes mainly from chromium, the same element that often causes Ruby’s fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Africa is an important source of Ruby material, with Ruby deposits known from countries such as Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, and other mineral-rich regions.
