Description

Locality: Touissit, Morocco

Description: Touissit, in far northeastern Morocco about 30 km south of Oujda, gave collectors some of the world's best-known yellow wulfenite. The town sits in the Touissit-Bou Beker district, a 16 km string of lead-zinc deposits counted among the ten largest of their type in the world.

The original ore, galena and sphalerite, formed in Jurassic dolomite from hot, salty fluids at about 100 to 135 °C. Long afterward, uplift and weathering oxidized the upper levels. Lead freed from the galena combined with molybdenum to grow thin, bright tabular wulfenite crystals, along with cerussite, anglesite and vanadinite.

Mining ran from 1926 until the main mines closed in June 2002, after producing about 70 million tonnes of ore. Only small artisanal digging continues, and many fine Touissit wulfenites date from finds in the late 1970s and 1980s.

You get the exact piece shown, about 7 cm across and 82 g, with thin, bright lead molybdate crystals.

In crystal traditions, wulfenite is associated with willpower, confidence and creativity.
