Rubble Rock and Gem is looking for an Assistant Manager.

Please apply with a cover letter, a paragraph in an email, or something personable that lets me know why I should consider you.

  1. Know and care about rocks. If you aren’t interested in rocks- this job is not for you. Don't fake it. Don't lie during the interview. You either like rocks or you don’t. Decide before applying.
  2. Have computer skills. If you don’t know how to use excel, google drive, buy something on amazon, etc. This job is not for you.
  3. Be confident. You will be problem solving regularly. That is the definition of management- wrangling the employees, and completing all the odd jobs that fall outside their purview. If the company director asks you to do something and you don’t know how- say so. Be attentive and learn. Do not waste half the day trying to figure it out on your own, too scared to ask for help. Be efficient and dont waste company time trying to prove something. Make smart pros and cons choices and be effective in the workplace.
  4. Have good people skills. This doesn't mean you have to be extroverted. It means you have to be fair, honest and integral. None of that flirting B.S. in the workplace that makes people feel uncomfortable. Treat everyone with respect. When an issue arises- whether with staff or customers- resolve it with resonance. Do not be weak about it. Know right from wrong so you can take a stand on issues in the workplace, and feel justified in doing so.
  5. Have commitment. This job is not meant for someone who is still finding out who they are. It is not meant for someone who plans to move next year, etc. This job requires a lot of training and will take a few months just to find your rhythm. Don't take the job if it's not what you want, because if your heart's not in it- you’ll inevitably quit at the first emotional hurdles. If you love rocks, or enjoy management, then there is a lot to gain from this position as the owner just wants to grow and grow and grow the company.
  6. Have a great memory and learn fast. If your memory is poor, I want to see your notepad compartmentalized with various subcategories and color coordination. As your boss, I am 33 years old, run 4 different companies with 10 employees in this country and more in others. With this one, Rubble Rock and Gem, we are processing 10 000 transactions a year. I don’t have time for you to be slow in the head or body- testing my patience all day. If I give you laser precise directives and you fail the task miserably- I will begin to see you as daft and unhelpful, and wonder why I am paying you money.
  7. Be a boss. If you’re going to cry, and spend time talking about your feelings, you're not meant to be my assistant. There's a time and place for that, but it’s not with me. Too many emotional check ins, rather than just doing as I’m directing you to is going to get on my nerves. My tone, my delivery of assignments- all of it will happen through joy and relaxation somedays, but also under stress for others. I have days where 5 people want my attention all at once, and if you ask me a stupid question in those moments- I am going to make you feel stupid about it. Know your role, be present and be effective at assisting me and alleviating my workload- do not congest it.
  8. Integrate yourself. Feel at home, take on additional tasks. Suggest means of improving the workplace, ways to save money, ways to make more money, ways I can manage better, etc. Be involved in the company's growth and learn all you can about running it.

Daily Job Description:
You’ll have standard operating procedures, and so too will the other employees. You’ll be monitoring and helping them perform, as well as taking on any of their tasks when they are not present or the job position is not filled. This is a job where you must be multi faceted, as some days you’ll be driving recycling around the corner to the transfer station. Other days you’ll be adding products to the website. You could be organizing a storage room, printing labels for new products, picking up new signage from a print shop. The role is manager, and assistant. When I ask something of you, it could be anything required to keep the business moseying along. It could be watching the storefront for a day and interacting with retail customers. You’ll be sorting and scanning expense receipts, sending emails to customers who have delayed shipments, etc. That's why I need someone competent with leadership skills that fit the criteria above.
