Amber is fossilized tree resin. Copal, on the other hand, is a younger form of preserved tree resin that hasn’t fully fossilized. It is often labeled as "young amber," however this term can be misleading due to the unclear distinctions between the two. Colombian copal can be anywhere from tens of thousands to five million years old and is generally harder than copal from other regions, indicating it may often be on the older end of the spectrum. Additionally, Colombian copal is known for its remarkable clarity and vibrant color. It also takes a polish better than copal from other localities, which can be very gummy and not solid enough for easy carving.
Like amber, Colombian copal is highly UV reactive! it glows a bright green to ghostly blue-white color under UV light. It is reactive under long, short, and midwave UV, but the fluorescence is brightest under longwave UV.
