Description
Mined from: Coalmont, Similkameen Region, British Columbia, Canada
Description: Anthracite is the highest-rank coal, formed when ancient plant material was buried, compressed, and altered far beyond the softer stages of peat, lignite, and bituminous coal. This process drove off much of the moisture and volatile material, leaving behind a dense, hard, carbon-rich material with a bright, semi-metallic to vitreous luster. Material from Coalmont, British Columbia comes from a historic coal-producing area where sedimentary coal beds were subjected to enough pressure and heat over geological time to create this harder, cleaner-burning grade.
Unlike many minerals sold for crystal form or transparency, anthracite is valued for its texture, weight, deep black color, and industrial and geological significance. It breaks with a brittle fracture, often shows natural banding or irregular surfaces, and has long been recognized as an important fuel source because of its high carbon content and relatively efficient burn. In a collection, it stands out less for ornament and more for what it represents: compressed ancient life turned into one of the most carbon-concentrated natural materials commonly handled by collectors.
Anthracite is often associated with grounding, resilience, and endurance. Many people are drawn to it as a stone of strength and stability, appreciating its dark, solid presence as a symbol of persistence under pressure and transformation through time.
