Description

Origin: 200-300 feet deep in vast undersea canyons, Hawaii

Description: Black Coral is a rare deep water coral which grows as a small tree, formed by countless tiny marine animal skeletons.
Early warriors wore pieces of Black Coral believing this would protect them from harm; hence the scientific name derived was Antipathes Grandis.
Scuba diving has produced the new discoveries of black coral in Hawaii. The scuba diver descends into a new and exciting underseas world carrying his air in tanks and a knife for use against sharks.
At 300 feet the pressure is 10 times that at the surface, sometimes creating narcotic effects on the diver and the bends if he surfaces too quickly.
Valued for its rare jet color accented by the unusual cross section markings, Black Coral is cut, polished, and made into distinctive jewelry.
