Cholla (pronounced choy-a) Wood is the inside skeleton of the cacti plant. Cylindropuntia is the scientific name for the genus group that has over 20 types of species. When the plant dies the outer layer slowly breaks down and reveals wood.
This plant provides food and water for livestock and wild animals in the desert.
This wood is taken from the dead cactuses that aren't decomposing. So it is in good shape for art. Many people use it to make knife handles. The wood has been lightly sanded.
