Description

Mined from: Western Sahara

Description: NWA 7831 is a diogenite meteorite recovered from the Western Sahara, representing material from the deep crust of asteroid 4 Vesta. Diogenites are part of the HED (howardite–eucrite–diogenite) group and are composed primarily of coarse-grained orthopyroxene, formed in slow-cooling magmatic environments beneath the surface of their parent body. This gives them a more crystalline, granular texture compared to surface-formed basaltic meteorites.

These meteorites provide a rare look into the internal structure of differentiated asteroids, where melting and separation created layered compositions similar to planetary bodies. NWA 7831 likely originated deep within Vesta before being excavated by a large impact and sent into space. Its mineralogy and texture help scientists understand early planetary formation, differentiation, and the cooling history of small rocky bodies in the solar system.

Chemical Composition: Dominantly orthopyroxene ((Mg,Fe)SiO₃), typically low in calcium, with minor plagioclase (CaAl₂Si₂O₈–NaAlSi₃O₈) and trace chromite (FeCr₂O₄); rich in Mg, Fe, and Si.
