Description
Mined from: Mamuju area, West Sulawesi, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia
Description: This one of a kind grape agate specimen has a broad, sculptural shape with a pointed extension on one side and a thicker, rounded mass on the other, giving it a naturally dramatic outline. The entire surface is covered in tightly packed botryoidal growths made up of tiny rounded spheres, creating the soft, grape-like texture this material is known for. Color ranges across pale lavender, medium purple, dusty violet, and bluish-grey, with a few subtle greenish areas and lighter mineral patches adding contrast. The surface texture shifts from fine sugary druse to larger rounded bubbles, which gives the piece good visual depth without losing its smooth overall flow.
Grape agate is the trade name used for purple botryoidal chalcedony from Indonesia. It is not a separate mineral species, but a form of microcrystalline quartz that forms when silica-rich fluids deposit layer after layer inside cavities in volcanic host rock. The Indonesian material became famous because it combines strong natural color with dense spherical growths and unusual specimen shapes. This piece shows that well, especially in the way the botryoidal surface wraps across the whole specimen rather than sitting in one small cluster, making it a strong display piece from multiple angles.
