Description
Mined from: Madagascar
Era: Cretaceous period
Geological Age: Approximately 145 mya
Description: Delicately preserved and geologically ancient, this fossilized heart urchin hails from the Cretaceous Period—approximately 145 million years ago—off the fossil-rich coasts of Madagascar. These extinct echinoids, often called "spatangoids," showcase the signature heart-shaped symmetry that gave them their nickname. Their finely detailed exoskeletons (or tests) exhibit stunning natural etchings, once used to channel sediment across their bodies as they burrowed through the seafloor.
These urchins lived during an age of dinosaurs, flowering plants, and rising sea levels, offering a literal snapshot of marine life when much of Earth was a warm, shallow ocean. Today, their fossils are prized not only for their unique shape but also for their excellent preservation in Madagascar's limestone-rich deposits. Subtle radial patterns and the unmistakable heart form make each piece a naturally sculpted relic of evolutionary history.
