Geological Age: 145-201 mya

Description: This one of a kind pyritized belemnite fossil specimen from Djeganas, Russia features a dark, tapered belemnite guard still attached to a rounded, sparkling pyrite-rich matrix. The surface has a gritty metallic texture with small brassy pyrite crystals covering much of the bulb-like section, contrasting nicely with the darker, spear-shaped fossil portion. Belemnites were squid-like marine cephalopods, and the preserved part is usually the hard internal guard that helped stabilize the animal while it swam.

Pyritization happens when iron and sulfur-rich conditions replace or coat fossil material with pyrite, giving the specimen its metallic “fool’s gold” look. Belemnites lived in ancient seas during the Mesozoic and are useful fossils for understanding marine environments from the age of dinosaurs. Spiritually, belemnites are often associated with ancient wisdom, protection, direction, and grounding, while pyrite adds associations of confidence, strength, and abundance.
