The pink to red color comes from manganese (Mn²⁺) substituting for calcium in its crystal structure. The more iron replacing manganese, the more brownish or orange the hue becomes. It forms in hydrothermal veins, often in association with silver, lead, and copper deposits. This mineral is not only a favorite among collectors and lapidaries but also has industrial significance as a minor manganese ore. In Argentina, rhodochrosite forms in stalactites within ancient Incan silver mines. Locals call it "Rosa del Inca" (Inca Rose) and believe it’s the petrified blood of Incan royalty.
