Description: Sawfish are a group of cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Pristidae, characterized by their long, flat snouts lined with sharp, tooth-like structures that give them the appearance of a saw. These remarkable creatures have a long evolutionary history spanning the Mesozoic to Cenozoic eras, with fossils dating from approximately 145 to 23 million years ago. Fossilized sawfish teeth found in Moroccan localities are primarily from the Cretaceous (145 to 66 million years ago) and Paleogene (66 to 23 million years ago) periods.

Some ancient sawfish species were quite large, comparable in size to the largest modern species, which can reach lengths of up to 7 meters (23 feet). Like their modern relatives, ancient sawfish inhabited both marine and freshwater environments, as evidenced by fossils found in diverse sedimentary deposits, including coastal regions, river systems, and estuaries. Ancient sawfish survived several mass extinction events, including the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. Their adaptability to various environments likely contributed to their remarkable longevity. The modern sawfish species we see today are direct descendants of these ancient creatures, still bearing many of their ancestral traits and adaptations.
