Description

Mined from: Russia

Description: This Yooperlite skull from Russia appears at first as a gray, speckled stone with a volcanic texture, but under ultraviolet light it transforms—revealing vivid orange fluorescence that traces through the surface in branching patterns. The effect is caused by sodalite inclusions within a syenite matrix, which react naturally under UV exposure. Carved with precision, the skull form highlights both the stone’s complex mineral structure and its sculptural detail.

Yooperlite is a trade name for sodalite-bearing syenite, originally identified along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan. Comparable material has since been found in Russia, sharing the same distinctive fluorescence. The phenomenon occurs as ultraviolet light excites electrons in the sodalite’s crystal lattice, causing the orange glow. This combination of geological composition and optical behavior makes Yooperlite a distinctive specimen for both collectors and educators.

Historically, carved skulls have symbolized knowledge, transformation, and the transience of life. When rendered in Yooperlite, the form gains an additional layer of intrigue through its dual nature—ordinary in daylight, luminous in the dark. It stands as both a mineralogical curiosity and a finely executed example of contemporary lapidary art.
