Description

Locality: Liufengshan Mine, Guichi District, Chizhou, Anhui, China

Azurite is a copper carbonate, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, whose name comes from the Persian lazhward, for its blue colour. It forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits in carbonate rocks, often with malachite, and has a pale blue streak and a hardness of 3.5 to 4.

This one of a kind Azurite mineral specimen from China features a rough, porous matrix coated with deep navy-blue to nearly black-blue Azurite crystals and bright green Malachite patches. The surface has a rugged, vuggy structure with small sparkling crystal pockets set into natural cavities. The blue and green copper minerals give the piece strong colour contrast without looking overly polished or altered.

Azurite is a copper carbonate mineral that forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, often alongside Malachite, Chrysocolla, Cuprite, and other secondary copper minerals. China has produced many good Azurite and Malachite specimens from copper-bearing regions, especially where weathering has exposed older copper ore bodies. This specimen shows the classic pairing of blue Azurite with green Malachite, which is common in copper-rich deposits.

In crystal traditions, azurite is associated with insight and the third eye chakra, and malachite with growth and protection.
