Description

Locality: Mibladen Mining District, Morocco

Barite commonly forms well-shaped crystals, with more than 70 crystal forms recorded, usually as thin to thick tablets or prisms, and sometimes as crested or rosette-like clusters. It can be colourless, white, yellow, brown, grey or pale red, green or blue, and is often colour-zoned. It typically grows in low-temperature hydrothermal veins.

Mibladen lies about 25 km northeast of the town of Midelt, between Morocco's High Atlas and Middle Atlas mountains. Its deposit of barite and lead ore sits in Jurassic (Liassic) limestones and dolomites. Lead deposits there were first reported in 1907, and the Société des Mines d'Aouli worked the area from 1926.

After the industrial lead mines closed, between about 1976 and 1980 depending on the account, former miners turned to digging mineral specimens. Today miners around Mibladen still search for barite, as well as vanadinite and cerussite, and sell them through dealers in Midelt.

This one of a kind Barite mineral specimen from Morocco features a striking arrangement of thin, bladed crystal formations layered across a natural earthy matrix. The specimen shows warm tan, beige, peach, and light reddish-brown tones, with the Barite crystals forming stacked rosettes, fan-like clusters, and sharp tabular plates throughout the display face. The underside reveals a rugged porous matrix, giving the piece a natural sculptural quality and showing how the crystals grew outward from the host rock.

Barite is a barium sulfate mineral, recognized for its unusually high density and wide range of crystal habits. Moroccan Barite specimens are well known among collectors for their attractive desert-toned coloration, caused by iron-rich staining and natural mineral inclusions. Barite has historically been valued both as a collector mineral and as an important industrial mineral, especially because of its high specific gravity.

Spiritually, Barite is often associated with grounding, clarity, and energetic alignment. Many crystal collectors connect it with calm focus, emotional balance, and a steadying presence during meditation or personal reflection. Its layered, blade-like growth is often seen as a symbol of structure, patience, and natural formation over time.
