Description

Locality: Mibladen Mining District, Morocco

Mibladen lies about 25 km northeast of the town of Midelt, between Morocco's High Atlas and Middle Atlas mountains. Its deposit of barite and lead ore sits in Jurassic (Liassic) limestones and dolomites. Lead deposits there were first reported in 1907, and the Société des Mines d'Aouli worked the area from 1926.

Barite is barium sulfate, BaSO4. Its name comes from the Greek for weight, because it is unusually heavy for a non-metallic mineral, with a density of about 4.5. It is soft, at 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, and has a vitreous to resinous, sometimes pearly lustre.

After the industrial lead mines closed, between about 1976 and 1980 depending on the account, former miners turned to digging mineral specimens. Today miners around Mibladen still search for barite, as well as vanadinite and cerussite, and sell them through dealers in Midelt.

This one-of-a-kind Barite mineral specimen from Morocco displays an attractive mix of soft cream, beige, tan, and warm peachy-brown tones across a dense field of layered crystal formations. The piece features beautifully developed bladed and tabular Barite crystals arranged in clustered rosettes and fan-like groupings, creating a striking natural texture from every angle. The front shows abundant stacked crystal growth, while the reverse reveals a rugged, porous matrix that adds depth and character to the specimen.

Moroccan Barite is especially prized by collectors for its sculptural crystal habits and earthy desert coloration. This specimen has a balanced display presence with excellent visual interest on both the crystal-covered face and the natural matrix side. Its varied crystal size, layered structure, and contrasting tones make it a distinctive collector piece and a beautiful natural display specimen.

Barite is a barium sulfate mineral known for its high specific gravity, attractive crystal habits, and range of colors. In metaphysical traditions, Barite is often associated with grounding, focus, inner stability, and mental clarity. Many collectors and crystal enthusiasts value it for its calming, structured energy and its connection to patience, balance, and spiritual alignment.
