Description

Locality: Black Petrified Forest, Arizona, U.S.A.

Description: The petrified wood from the Black Forest region of Arizona dates back to the Late Triassic period, approximately 200 to 225 million years ago. During this time, the area was covered by a lush forest that included trees such as ancient conifers.

Petrified wood is a type of fossil formed when plant material, typically wood, is buried under sediment and then subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. During this process, the organic material is replaced by minerals, usually silica, which crystallize and preserve the original structure of the wood. The result is a beautiful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
