Description: This trilobite is named after the jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Coltraneia lived during the Devonian, from the late Emsian into the early Eifelian, roughly 390 million years ago, on the floor of the shallow seas that covered what is now Morocco. Its fossils are also known from Algeria, France, Germany and Spain.

Its best-known feature is a pair of unusually tall eyes, built from many separate lenses. Eyes like these gave a wide view in nearly every direction, useful for an animal on many predators' menus. Coltraneia also has short spines on the head and short, curved spines on the tail. The Moroccan species, Coltraneia oufatenensis, was named by Morzadec in 2001 after Jbel Oufaten, near Alnif, where it is found.

Older labels sometimes call this trilobite Treveropyge. The taller eyes set Coltraneia apart.

In crystal traditions, trilobite fossils are associated with endurance and deep time.
