Description

Locality: Charcas, Charcas Municipality, San Luis Potosí, Mexico

Description: This danburite comes from Charcas in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, a classic danburite locality. The mineral itself is named after Danbury, Connecticut, where it was first described in 1839.

Charcas is an old mining district. Its first silver veins were found in 1583, and after the rich oxidized ores were worked out by about 1870, mining turned to the deeper sulfide ores. Today it is a skarn district, where hot fluids from intruding magma altered limestone and deposited zinc, lead, silver and copper. Mines include San Sebastián, Morelos, La Bufa, Aurora and Las Lupes, operated by Industrial Minera México, part of Grupo México.

Danburite is a calcium borosilicate, and at Charcas it forms in the skarn alongside the ores. It is recorded from at least six mines in the district, including San Sebastián and Aurora.

These are clear to white danburite crystals, sold by the piece.

In crystal traditions, danburite is associated with calm and emotional balance.
