Description

Mined from: Barahona Province mines (primarily around Los Chupaderos), Dominican Republic

Description: Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite distinguished by its calming oceanic coloration, ranging from pale sky blue to deep volcanic turquoise with white marbling. It forms in cavities within basaltic volcanic rock and typically exhibits a silky to vitreous luster when polished. Tumbled larimar specimens are smooth and cool to the touch, often displaying wave-like patterns reminiscent of tropical Caribbean waters. With a Mohs hardness of approximately 4.5–5, larimar is relatively soft compared to quartz minerals, making it ideal for gentle handling, jewelry, and collector specimens.

Found only in the Dominican Republic, larimar was officially rediscovered in 1974 by Miguel Méndez and Norman Rilling in the remote mountains of Barahona Province. The name combines “Larissa,” the daughter of Méndez, with the Spanish word “mar,” meaning sea. Although pectolite itself occurs worldwide, the striking volcanic blue coloration unique to Dominican larimar is exceptionally rare. Mining operations remain relatively small-scale and labor intensive, with material often extracted by hand from narrow volcanic tunnels in the Caribbean highlands.

Spiritually, larimar is widely associated with tranquility, emotional healing, and soothing communication. Often called the “Stone of Atlantis” or the “Dolphin Stone,” it is believed to embody calming ocean energy that helps reduce stress and encourage inner peace. Crystal practitioners frequently connect larimar with the throat chakra, using it to support honest expression, emotional clarity, and harmonious relationships. Its gentle energy is also thought to encourage relaxation, feminine wisdom, and connection to water and nature.
