Description: Moqui Marbles are small, brownish-black iron oxide concretions and sandstone that formed underground when iron minerals precipitated from flowing groundwater. They occur in southern Utah and Arizona and are either embedded in or gathered loosely into "puddles" on the ground near outcrops of Jurassic age Navajo Sandstone. These stony spheres are actually concretions - sandstone balls cemented by a hard shell of iron oxide minerals. If you cut one in half you will find a hematite shell with a sold sandstone center. The outer sell of hematite (iron oxide) congealed around a sandstone center which may be stained red or yellow from the iron oxides leaching into the sand. occasionally there are extra rings hematite in the center similar stones are actually found on mars and are called "blueberries".
