Description
Locality: Arizona, U.S.A.
Description: Mushroom Rhyolite is found in several areas northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The rock gets its name from the repeating gray pattern that sometimes looks like a mass of growing mushrooms. Due to the high silica content, rhyolite lava is very viscous. Some portions contain a reddish halo which surrounds the outside of the gray massive "thundereggs" providing a colorful contrast on the rock. When cut in half the mushroom looks like a burst within the rock formation.
Traditionally, mushroom rhyolite has been associated with harmony and creativity.
