Description: This Perisphinctes ammonite fossil from Aarau, Switzerland is a coiled relic of ancient seas, dating back to the Oxfordian Stage of the Late Jurassic Period—approximately 160 to 157 million years ago. These extinct marine mollusks, part of the cephalopod family, once thrived in the warm, shallow seas that covered much of Europe during the Mesozoic Era. Characterized by their tightly ribbed, planispiral shells, Perisphinctes species are prized by collectors and paleontologists alike for their beautifully symmetrical forms and intricate suture patterns, which speak to the evolutionary artistry of Jurassic life.

The fossil beds near Aarau yield particularly well-preserved specimens, often still embedded in fine-grained limestone matrices that formed in a stable, low-energy marine environment. Unlike more common ammonites from Madagascar or Morocco, Swiss Perisphinctes fossils are rarer on the market and offer a glimpse into the ancient ecosystems of what was once the northern margin of the Tethys Ocean. These specimens are not only aesthetically striking but also scientifically significant—markers of biostratigraphic zones used to date other rock layers worldwide.
