Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, and its name comes from the Greek for blood, for its colour. Even when its crystals are steel-grey and metallic, it leaves a cherry-red to reddish-brown streak. It has a hardness of 5 to 6 and is dense, at about 5.3.
This one of a kind Hematite Roses on Quartz specimen from China features dark, metallic Hematite rosettes growing directly on a Quartz crystal base. The specimen shows layered black Hematite “roses” sitting across and around the clear to smoky Quartz points, creating a striking contrast between glossy metallic blades and bright crystalline Quartz. The Hematite forms rounded, flower-like clusters with thin stacked plates, giving the piece strong texture, sparkle, and sculptural depth.
Quartz is one of the most abundant and historically important minerals in the world, while Hematite has long been valued as an iron ore and pigment mineral. The “Hematite Rose” habit is especially collectible because bladed Hematite crystals naturally arrange into rosette-like formations. Chinese specimens with Hematite roses growing on Quartz are admired for their dramatic contrast, with the dark metallic Hematite appearing to bloom across the lighter Quartz crystal surface.
In crystal traditions, quartz is associated with clarity, and hematite with grounding and protection.
