Description
Locality: Uchucchacua Mine, Oyón Province, Lima Department, Peru
Description: This one of a kind Rhodochrosite sphere from Peru features a broad mix of salmon pink, rose, cream, tan, gray, and charcoal-toned mineral zones. One side shows larger crystalline pink sections with visible cleavage and a brighter, more reflective polish, while the opposite side carries tighter banded formations with irregular dark gray and black patches. Natural cavities, small pits, and open vugs are scattered through the sphere, giving the piece a rougher texture in places and breaking up the smoother polished surface.
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral known for its pink, rose-red, and reddish coloration, often forming in hydrothermal ore deposits alongside other manganese and metallic minerals. Peru is an important source of Rhodochrosite, particularly from polymetallic mining districts in the Andes, where it can occur as banded masses, vein material, and crystalline growths. The repeated layering visible in this sphere is typical of material that formed through changing mineral-rich fluids depositing Rhodochrosite over time.
